Extend PMD Fails to Compile: Failed to Generate WUL From PMD Snippet
What does "Failed to generate WUL from PMD snippet... Exception" mean in Workday Extend?
The PMD could not be compiled into the representation the page actually renders from. Something in the snippet is structurally invalid, or a binding does not match the shape of the data behind it. The 'contact your administrator' wording is a generic wrapper and does not mean you have a tenant or permissions problem.
Quick fix
Swap the dynamic binding for a hard-coded literal in the expected shape to get the page compiling again, then reintroduce the binding once you have confirmed the endpoint returns that same shape.
Permanent fix
Check an endpoint's real response shape before binding it into a widget attribute, rather than assuming it. Keep a known-good static example of each complex attribute in the app so a later change can be diffed against something that is known to compile.
Troubleshooting
- Note which widget or attribute you edited last. The compile fails on the snippet as a whole, so the message does not point at a line number.
- Cut the snippet back to a minimal version of that widget, confirm it compiles, then add attributes back one at a time until it breaks again.
- Replace any dynamic binding with a static literal in the shape the attribute expects. If it compiles with the literal, the problem is the binding or the data, not the widget.
- Compare the real response from your endpoint against what the attribute expects. An array of objects supplied where a single object is expected, or the reverse, is a common mismatch.
